When we think about influential fashion and design figure Iris Apfel, one word in particular comes to mind: Icon. Our collaboration with Iris was created in honor of her recent 100th birthday, and it’s our way of celebrating all she’s offered the fashion industry while introducing her to those who aren’t yet familiar with her laundry list of impressive accomplishments but share penchant for expressing individuality through style. Many of you know Iris for her signature oversized spectacles, colorful ensembles, and more-is-more approach to accessorizing, but there’s so much more to know about this inspiring centenarian!
Always interested in the possibilities of color, texture, pattern, and materials, Iris had a flourishing career in interior design long before she was singled out for her whimsical wardrobe. As the founder of textile-manufacturing company Old World Weavers, she’s worked on many high profile projects, including the White House! But it was when she loaned her personal collection of costume jewelry to The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that she became synonymous with impeccable and inspiring style.
Since then, Iris has published multiple books, inspired her own Barbie, been the subject of a documentary, donated tons of her own fashionable treasures to institutions in the U.S. and abroad, and collaborated on collections with the likes of HSN, Grandin Road, Bernadaud, and many more. At 100 years old, she’s as prolific and influential as ever, which makes working with her on our Icon Box such a special experience for CURATEUR!
