Jackie Mack is actually a family business you took over and relaunched! Can you share a bit about the brand’s beginning and the changes you implemented more recently?
When I decided to relaunch the brand, I wanted to pursue a new business challenge, something I could build from the ground up. The timing was perfect: I was spending more time at home with my now late husband and I needed a creative outlet. Building a company I could be proud of with ethical practices and substantiality at its heart that delivered elevated jewelry essentials with a sleek aesthetic is how this journey began. I launched my first collection of earrings four years ago with a focus on earring stacking, and since then we have added necklaces, rings, and bracelets to spice up our range.
Most recently we have introduced more statement pieces, because I think we all need to make our style a little extra special and enjoy creating moments with family and friends that make us feel good and look great knowing that your pieces have been thoughtfully made.
Prior to relaunch, you were working in the automotive industry. What unique perspective do you think that career experience offered you as a designer and e-commerce entrepreneur.
As a designer, you need to think about the lifestyle and aspirations of your buyer. Car designers/manufacturers are great at this. They design a vehicle that suits a particular buyer. Are you a city driver or do you have an outdoorsy lifestyle? Do you want a sleek modern design or more focused on energy consumption? What are the needs the vehicle must meet for the buyer?
With jewelry you need to think about this too. Who will wear it? How? And where? What purpose will a certain piece have in their lifestyle? Is it practical or not? Will the person wearing this piece wear it all day or occasionally? All these questions are important—not only when you design but when you decide the materials and pricing.
As an e-commerce entrepreneur, I always find myself thinking how I would have resolved today’s problem back then when I was in the auto industry, and 99% of the time this perspective helps me find the answer I need or the path I should take. From finance to stock management, inventory forecasting, logistics, the key here is to translate all the learnings and adapt them to e-commerce in every facet of the business.
We love Jackie Mack’s sustainable approach to design. In what ways do you try to reduce the brand’s carbon footprint?
Our efforts go from offsetting carbon emissions for every delivery booked via our shipping partner—who works with internationally recognized carbon solutions providers to reduce our climate impact—to relying on world-leading organizations that conduct factory audits on the safe use and disposal of chemicals during the manufacturing process.
Through improved packaging solutions that are recyclable, reusable jewelry pouches, zero single-use plastics, and compostable satchels, we aim to minimize and improve our environmental impact. We use recycled gold and sterling silver in the manufacturing of our jewelry products. This helps reduce CO2 emissions by not using mined materials.
